Faces of Our
Students
Our newest Yorktown University student, Guada Perry,
was born in the Philippines and lived in Hawaii for
fourteen years where she finished high school. As you
can imagine, Hawaii offers recreational opportunities
that most of us were never fortunate enough to
experience when we were growing up. She fondly remembers
barbecues on the beach at Christmas, school beach
parties and the lure of the Pacific Ocean.
Guada feels that her high school years in Hawaii
could have been more challenging, and that experience
has shaped her desire for a good college education.
Guada moved from Hawaii to Southern California’s City of
Orange, in Orange County, where she attended Orange
Coast College in Costa Mesa.
Unfortunately, and despite Orange County’s reputation
as a conservative county, she found Orange Coast College
to be very liberal politically. PC ideas were forced on
students, she reports. The Political Science and English
Departments were the worst, favoring very liberal ideas
that excluded discussion about religion and values.
Other Departments were equally politically correct. In a
Speech class where her instructor encouraged openness,
she was ostracized for her views on sex and evolution.
When her topics were non-PC, she reports, “I was shut
down.” Towards her last few semesters, she simply lost
interest in trying hard to excel academically while
working against the tide of her professors’ views.
“It’s tough being an oddity,” Guada says.
We asked Guada how she found out about Yorktown
University and she reports that she was reading Patriots
History of the United States by
Larry Schweikart. Dr. Larry Schweikart developed a
course in the History of Western Civilization and
favorably mentions Yorktown University in that book. So
Guada looked us up on the Internet, made application,
and was admitted as a Degree Candidate for the BA in
Government.
Guada has a one year old daughter, and her husband
owns and manages his own fitness facility in Irvine,
California. Guada says that she intends to find a good
Christian school for her daughter or she’ll become a
Homeschool mother.
She has completed her first course, US History to
1800, and tells us that she believes that the recorded
lectures and assigned readings in that course taught her
more about American history than she had learned in all
previous courses she has taken. She has chosen Govt201,
Origins of the Constitution, as her next course.
Thank you, Guada, for telling us something about
yourself.
On the Road with Dr. Wade Shol in Southern,
California
Yorktown’s Director of Military
Admissions, former U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, Dr.
Wade Shol, is Yorktown’s Charles Kuralt. Kuralt, a
CBS journalist who reported the sights, sounds and the
people of America, stayed on the road for a
quarter-century. In order to do that, he worked from a
Recreational Vehicle. Dr. Shol, similarly, is always on
the road for Yorktown University and he has just
returned from a tour of bases in Southern California.
Here is his report on his recent tour of southern
California military bases:
“From the very beginning when this tour was planned,
I was determined to finish my trip with a stop at the
Ronald Reagan Library in Thousand Oaks. This
presidential library is located at a stunning location
that every American should visit at least once. Having
stood on this tour before the statutes of James
Stockdale and Chuck Yeager, I was now standing before
the towering statue of Ronald Reagan at the entrance to
his library. I was left wondering where America found
these men of demonstrated greatness?
God’s Providence placed them at that moment in
American history where from modest means they rose to
save our way of life from those seeking to destroy it.
I had to ask myself, “Are we still able to produce
men of such quality?”
It is obvious, from visiting military installations
over the course of the week of July 18-24, that there
are men and women willing to rise to every occasion.
Those serving today choose to do service fully aware of
the risks and sacrifices they will be asked to
make.”
