Virginia/Maryland
Tour of Military Bases
Yorktown
University was invited to participate in an education
fair at Walter Reed Medical Center in DC, so Dr. Wade
Shol hit the road! Andrews, Ft. McNair, Quantico,
Ft. Eustis, Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, Langley and
several other installations were visited. Here is Wade’s
report:
The
week of March 15 started off in the Tidewater, Virginia
area beginning with visits by Yorktown’s President,
Richard Bishirjian, at Fort Story and Norfolk Naval
Base. I joined Dr. Bishirjian on March 16
beginning at Langley Air Force Base, Yorktown Naval
Weapons Facility, and Fort Eustis.
From
there we proceeded to Bethesda, Maryland, where we
participated in an education fair sponsored by Walter
Reed Medical Center. The Wednesday education fair opened
with a moving speech given by football legend and
Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker. Mr. Walker
explained how he overcame adversity during his life and
encouraged his audience to have faith because God is
looking out for all of us.
The
audience included family members who were there to
support these brave men and women. We left Walter
Reed convinced that all staff members are doing an
outstanding job providing for the physical and
psychological care our wounded warriors. If more
Americans could witness firsthand the work being done at
Walter Reed, we Americans would better appreciate what
it means to serve our country.
The
remainder of the week we called on Education Services
Officers at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, Fort Myer
in Arlington, Virginia, and the large Marine Corps Base
at Quantico, Virginia. Additionally, we paid a visit to
the congressional offices of Colorado Congressman Mike
Coffman in the Longworth House Office
Building. Cong. Coffman, who serves on the
Armed Services Committee, took a leave of absence from
his elected position as Colorado’s Secretary of State to
serve in Iraq.
I
felt that the tour was a success. Every ESO we met
conveyed a very professional commitment to their service
personnel and showed interest in some of Yorktown’s
unique academic programs, such as the MBA in
Entrepreneurship, as well as the MA in Government.
Dr. Bishirjian pointed out that military service was
affected—for good or ill—by politics and economics and
it was of benefit to every American to become better
informed about the Constitution of the United States and
America’s burgeoning national
debt.
We
were very pleased that all ESO personnel recognized that
the Distance Education and Training Council is chartered
by the U.S. Department of Education and that the growth
of Internet education explains the exponential increase
in enrollments in distance learning programs by U.S.
military personnel. Classroom based instruction is
fine—if you know that you’re going to be in town at
exactly the same time every day for three days a week
for 14 to 16 weeks.
Dr.
Shol’s next tour, starting May 17, takes him to NSA New
Orleans; NAS JRB New Orleans; Keesler AFB, Naval
Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, Coast Guard
Sector Mobile, NAS Pensacola, Ft. Rucker, Maxwell AFB;
Ft. Benning, Columbus AFB and Key Field
Meridian.
Virginia
Advisory Council on Military
Education
Yorktown
University was pleased to be invited to attend Virginia
ACME’s annual education conference in Williamsburg,
Virginia, March 10 to 11. Yorktown hopes to attend
ACME conferences in several states this year and
next.

Though
the Obama Administration’s
economic

Supply-side Economics is the solution. That approach to

Be Careful!
Your Wish May Have Unintended
Consequences
Click

Denver Talk Show host, Mike Rosen
on the topic of
“Term Limits.” Term Limits
are supposed to stop the disease of careerism among
elected officials. After several terms of
office—and sometimes in less time—politicians tend to
lose their enthusiasm for conflict and adopt the maxim
“to get along, go along.” Yorktown University’s
president, Dr. Richard Bishirjian, argues that,
unfortunately, there is no procedural guarantee to
assure that politicians represent those who elect
them.
Sincerely
yours,

Richard
